What Is a Birth Chart?

A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. Your Sun sign is just one detail in that picture; the whole chart says much more.

What Is a Chart Made Of?

A chart combines three components. Planets tell which theme is at work, signs tell in what tone that theme operates, and houses tell in which area of your life it shows up. For example, if Venus (love) is in Capricorn (cautious, loyal) and in the seventh house (relationships), the reading goes like this: slow but lasting commitment in relationships.

What Do the Planets Tell?

Sun· Identity

Your core character, what you care about and what you put at the center of your life.

Moon· Emotion

Your emotional needs, the way you feel safe and your first reactions.

Mercury· Mind

How you think, learn and express yourself.

Venus· Love

What you find beautiful, how you love and what you value.

Mars· Action

How you go after what you want, your anger and your way of fighting.

Jupiter· Expansion

Your luck, your faith and where you want to grow in life.

Saturn· Boundary

Your responsibilities, the areas where you struggle and the lesson you're maturing through.

Uranus· Breaking point

The unexpected change, originality and the place where you challenge the rules.

Neptune· Imagination

Your intuition, art, ideals, and the side of you that sometimes blurs the truth.

Pluto· Transformation

Deep crisis and rebirth; the area of your life that changes at its roots.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information do I need for a birth chart?
Three pieces of information: birth date, birth time and birth place. The date sets the planets' signs, the time sets the rising sign and houses, and the place sets the horizon's position. Together they pin the chart to a single moment.
I don't know my birth time, can a chart still be made?
The signs of the planets can be worked out; the rising sign and house placements won't be reliable. The Moon may also have changed signs during the day. Even without a time, a chart still gives meaningful information about the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars.
Is the rising sign the same as the birth chart?
No. The rising sign is one part of the chart — the sign where the first house begins. The birth chart is the whole, covering all the planets, houses and the angles between them.
What does an angle (aspect) mean?
It's the degree difference between two planets. Trine and sextile are considered flowing, square and opposition tense. Aspects show which sides of you support each other and which clash in the chart.
Does the chart show fate?
No. Astrology is used not as a tool of prophecy but as a symbolic language for reflecting on yourself. No placement in the chart makes any outcome inevitable.
