What Is a Rising Sign?

You know your sign, but if it doesn't quite describe you, the reason is often your rising sign. Here we separate the three basic layers of the chart.

01

Sun Sign

The sign the Sun was in when you were born.

The best-known layer. It describes your core character, what motivates you and what you put at the center of your life. Only the date of birth is needed, which is why everyone knows their sign.

02

Moon Sign

The sign the Moon was in when you were born.

Shows your emotional world, how you feel safe and your first reactions. Since the Moon changes signs about every two and a half days, birth time matters: two people born on the same day can have different moon signs.

03

Rising Sign

The sign rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth.

Your outward face: how people first get to know you, how you come across and the attitude you bring to life. The chart's house system also starts from the rising sign, so it's the layer that needs the most technical precision.

How Is the Rising Sign Calculated?

The calculation relies on three details: date of birth, time of birth and place of birth. With these three, the sky at that moment is rebuilt and we look at which sign the eastern horizon crosses. It can be done by hand but requires ephemeris tables and house calculations; in practice it's done with a calculator that uses real planet positions.

The Günlük Kahin app does this calculation with real ephemeris data — not an approximate table. We keep your birth details only in the app, in your own account; this page asks for no personal information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the rising sign and the sun sign?
The Sun sign describes the inside, the rising sign describes the outside. Your Sun sign describes what you want, while your rising sign describes how you come across. When the two are in different signs, you may feel a clear gap between the self you know and the self others see.
Is birth time required for the rising sign?
Yes. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours; if the time isn't known, the rising sign can't be calculated reliably. If you don't know your birth time, it may be written on your birth certificate or civil registry record.
What if my birth time is approximate?
A half-hour deviation usually doesn't change the rising sign, but it does if you were born near a sign boundary. In that case your rising sign becomes one of two candidates; your moon sign and planetary positions stay largely correct.
Why is birth place requested?
The rising sign is determined by which sign the horizon cuts at the moment you were born, and the horizon varies by location. Two people born in the same minute in Istanbul and Diyarbakir can end up with different rising signs.
How do I find my moon sign?
It's calculated from your date, time and place of birth. In the Günlük Kahin app, once you enter these three details, your moon sign, rising sign and all your planet positions appear together.
